How can I determine the ring size without having a ring on hand?

Determining ring sizes is one of the most important points before you can buy or even gift a ring. Without a reference point or a measurement of the ring size, it can quickly lead to purchasing the wrong size. Therefore, we will present you with a few options below on how you can determine the correct ring size.

Ring sizes vary depending on the hand, the finger, and also depending on the season and temperature. Therefore, it is important to first consider for which finger and which hand you want the ring.

Most of the time, the dominant hand used for writing is slightly more muscular, which means larger ring sizes are needed there than on the other hand. In summer or when coming in from the cold into a warm room, your fingers are often a bit swollen, while in cold weather and winter they are somewhat thinner. Depending on the person, these values can vary more or less. Therefore, it is always advisable to measure the ring size on different days and at different times of the day to obtain the ideal value. 

For measuring, there are numerous methods and tricks that we would like to present to you below.

If you don't have a ring on hand, we will show you three other ways to determine the right size and then convert it to your ring size.

With a measuring tape, you can easily measure the circumference of your finger where you would like to wear the ring, e.g., on the ring finger. It should not be too loose and not too tight; this measurement corresponds to the inner circumference of your ring.

If you don't have a measuring tape on hand, you can simply cut out a strip of paper, preferably directly in about the width of the ring you want to order. This can also be easily done with a thread. Here, you wrap the strip or thread snugly around the finger on which you would like to wear the ring later and mark the length with a pen. You can then simply place this strip next to a ruler. The measured value also corresponds to the inner circumference of the ring.

With this size guide, there are two ways to determine the ring size:

Either you place a ring that fits well on the marked circles, the sizes shown correspond to the inner circumference of the ring. 

Or, if you don't have a suitable ring on hand, you can cut out our measuring tape and cut along the dotted line. Now, just wrap the measuring tape around the desired finger and you can read your ideal ring size.

Especially when gifting a special ring like the engagement ring, it is important that the recipient does not notice anything beforehand. That’s why we have gathered a few ideas for you on how to secretly find out the ring size of the ring finger.

Even though every person is different, there are ring sizes that are mostly purchased for women and those that are mostly purchased for men. Especially if you have no indication of what ring size might fit, these values can be a good guideline.

Women's ring sizes typically range between 48 and 56, while men's ring sizes are approximately between 57 and 62. Additionally, it helps to consider whether the person is rather petite and small or tall and, for example, has more muscular fingers due to manual work. Depending on this, one can then choose a ring size from the lower guideline for petite individuals, such as a 48 for women, or from the upper guideline, such as a 62 for more muscular men.

Even though this can be a first approximation, the sizes determined in this way remain only estimates that can vary quite individually.

If there is an opportunity for you to ask the recipient if you can try on their ring in a suitable situation, you can also determine the ring size this way. Sometimes you catch a brief moment when you have access to your ring and can quickly try it on.

Then put the ring on your hand and remember which finger or at which point on one of your fingers the ring fits well. Later, you can measure on your finger using one of the methods described above to find out what the inner circumference of that point is.
