Sustainable jewelry label: jewelry design meets sustainability

Sustainability

There are not many holistically sustainable jewelry labels in Germany. Because it is no secret how problematic the extraction and trading of precious metals such as gold and silver or diamonds are. Both social and ecological sustainability are therefore usually completely neglected with conventional jewelery labels and their jewelery design and the extraction of raw materials has serious consequences for people and nature. At Maren Jewelery we want to do things differently. Because for us there is an incredible amount of passion, love and a wealth of detail in jewelry design and craftsmanship that we believe deserves conscious and holistic, sustainable attention. After all, for many people, jewelry represents a lifelong companion with great emotional value. For us, one thing was clear from the start: jewelry design and sustainability must be conditional at Maren Jewellery: We want to be a jewelry label that thinks sustainability holistically down to the smallest detail, because we love nature in all its facets. That's why we want their beauty in ours sustainable jewellery reflect and make them in harmony with it. That sounds incredibly beautiful and promising at first, but what does that mean in concrete terms? How we have recorded our project and how we put it into practice as a sustainable jewelery label, you can read here every day..

Our WeMind sustainability initiative

As a mindful, sustainable and responsible jewelry label, our values are paramount. In order to make these values tangible for us and for you as a consumer, we also launched our We Mind initiative when we founded Maren Jewellery.

Sustainable , Responsible and Mindful represent the three core values of our sustainability initiative. Each core value is subdivided into five additional requirements that we have imposed on our jewelry design and entrepreneurial activity. Under Sustainable we collect the demands on our materials and their reusability. Responsible summarizes our personal requirements for our production and our partners. And under Mindful we understand the careful treatment of ourselves, nature and other living beings.

Here you will find the details of all the content and components of our WeMind initiative.

What we are committed to as a sustainable jewelry label

Our vision is to make the world a better place. In order to get a little bit closer to this goal every day, we have consciously teamed up with other partners who care about sustainable jewelry design. Because we think that the more people who come together with a similar set of values, the more we can move as a group.

Our vision is to make the world a better place.

We are certified B Corporation

We are incredibly proud to be the first German jewelry label to be part of the B Corp movement. B Corp is a globally recognized award and certification for companies that operate sustainably, mindfully, and responsibly. The requirements align 1 to 1 with the values of Maren Jewellery, and we are overjoyed that our efforts and business concept have withstood the rigorous examination by B Lab. The cooperation serves once again as proof: Sustainability in jewelry design is possible.

If you are interested in more details, you will find them in our journal about the B Corp certification.

Climate-positive jewelry production

Entrepreneurial activity causes CO₂, as does, of course, the manufacture of jewellery. Nevertheless, there are enormous differences. On average, the production of a piece of jewelery causes 29.27 kg of CO₂. Our pieces of jewelry, on the other hand, only cause an average of 0.4 kg of CO₂. This means that Maren Jewelery produces around 73 times less CO₂ than conventional pieces of jewellery. how do we do it?

The majority of CO₂ emissions are generated during material extraction. With us, only a negligibly small part of the emissions can be traced back to the materials. The reason for this is our conscious decision to use CO₂ neutral gold and our synthetic diamonds with a climate-neutral footprint. We are already making further adjustments. These include, for example, a Fairphone, green electricity, avoiding air travel or keeping transport routes as short as possible.

As mentioned, our CO₂ balance is well below that of conventional jewelry labels. But since our goal is to combine jewelry design and sustainability in the best possible way, that wasn't enough for us. What we cannot save, we want to compensate. That's why we work with yout Choose together, an initiative that creates projects that offset the CO₂ consumption of donating companies and private individuals. With each of our pieces of jewelry we offset 100 kilograms of CO₂. In this way, we offset more CO₂ than we produce. The result: a positive CO₂ balance and thus climate positivity.

We strive for circular economy in jewelry design

For us, sustainable jewelry design means that our products are part of a circular economy and we strengthen the circular economy by doing so. It is a form of economy in which products are shared, borrowed, reused and repaired for as long as possible, so as not to consume new materials and to save resources.

As a sustainable jewelery label, we therefore only use recycled precious metals and synthetic eco diamonds, use recyclable packaging, only produce to order and enable all Maren Jewelery pieces to be melted down again and processed into new pieces of jewellery. Unfortunately, there are only a few jewelery labels that have taken on this task.

Transparent sustainability reporting

For you and for us, we have decided to write a sustainability report to show transparently what makes us really sustainable as a jewelry label. This enabled us to get an accurate picture of our status quo and define concrete future goals. Our report gives you detailed information about our values, goals and results.

We support the Earthbeat Foundation

With 3% of our annual profit we support themEarthbeat Foundation . With the Earthbeat Foundation, we have found another important partner in our commitment to more sustainability in the jewelry industry. The clearly formulated goal is: The legal, safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly use of gold as a raw material must be supported and new gold mining must be stopped.

Even if we only use recycled gold from the beginning, it is a matter of the heart for us to support the initiative and drive change.

We process sustainable, recycled materials

The fact that we are very careful when choosing our materials and that all our decisions are made consciously is probably evident from the previous text. In the following, we would like to show you exactly which materials we use to ensure that sustainability and jewelry design are compatible.

Gold and silver from urban mining

Even if we only use recycled gold from the beginning, it is a matter of the heart for us to support the initiative and drive change. We'll keep it short and sweet: Hardly any raw material can be recycled as easily as gold. There is no loss when the precious metal is melted down again. By recycling existing gold urban mining, no further damage is done to the environment and people and the circular economy is promoted. In our opinion, there is not a single reason that speaks against this most sustainable form of gold extraction and processing. Here you can find more details about our en Urban mining process of gold extraction.

Diamonds grown in the laboratory

For us, sustainable jewelery design also means responsibility with regard to diamonds: the production of our jewelery must not take place at the expense of our planet. However, a conflict-free origin of diamonds is usually difficult to trace and prove. In addition to ecological aspects, this is one of the main reasons why we, as a sustainable jewelry label, decided to use laboratory-grown diamonds right from the start. The synthetic diamonds do not differ in their external appearance and uniqueness from natural diamonds and at the same time can be worn without a guilty conscience. Find out in our Journal of Synthetic Diamonds more about the topic and our suppliers.

Ecological packaging

Making the design process holistically sustainable is of great importance to us. For us as a jewelery label, sustainable jewelery design does not end with the finished piece of jewellery. The packaging and the packaging material should also meet our high standards. The linen for our Linen Case, the cardboard for our Paper Case, our paper insert, the filler material, the shipping labels and even the ink on our gift wrap come from sustainable partners who care about our nature as much as we do. So you can be sure that your new piece of jewelery will arrive in the most environmentally friendly way possible. You can find all our partners in the field of packaging here.

Its a lot to do

Even if we are proud and convinced that we are already taking some important steps towards the compatibility of sustainability and jewelery design, we are not perfect either. We are far from the end of this exciting and at the same time challenging journey and as a sustainable jewelery label we want to continue to improve, learn and do our part for a more sustainable world.
