Synthetic diamonds, also called lab diamonds, are produced under controlled conditions in the laboratory. They have exactly the same chemical composition and exhibit identical structural properties as natural diamonds. Through strict quality controls and careful cutting processes, they match their natural counterparts in brilliance and quality, can compete on equal footing, and can be evaluated based on the 4 C’s. The only difference: they are formed not in the earth's crust, but in the lab. In doing so, they cause significantly lower environmental impacts in comparison. Even major luxury brands, such as LVMH, FRED, or Prada, rely on synthetic diamonds as a sustainable and socially responsible alternative. We are very pleased that lab diamonds are playing an increasingly important role in the jewelry industry and enabling sustainable luxury.
The quality of your diamond jewelry depends on the quality of the precious metal used, as well as the quality of the diamonds employed. When evaluating the quality of a diamond, four factors play a role: the weight (Carat), the color (Color), the cut quality (Cut), and the clarity (Clarity). Together, these evaluation factors are called the 4 C’s, by which every diamond can be classified. In a journal article, we explain the four C’s and their exact evaluation criteria in more detail. At Maren, we always use the following diamond quality for our lab-grown diamonds: The color of our stones ranges from D-G, meaning colorless to nearly colorless. The clarity is vvs-vs, which means: almost no inclusions, and the cut quality is "very good" to "Excellent." This overall very high quality of the lab diamonds used is, in our opinion, the best-suited combination for jewelry pieces. A higher quality would be more expensive but cannot be recognized with the naked eye as better, i.e., more sparkling, whiter, or flawless.
Only through the diamond cut does the rough diamond become the sparkling and radiant gemstone that we admire in our jewelry pieces. When choosing the perfect diamond jewelry, the craftsmanship and art of the cut are crucial to evaluate the differences and make an informed decision. There are many types of diamond cuts, each giving a unique personality to every piece of jewelry. Only you can decide whether you prefer, for example, a brilliant cut, princess cut, pear cut, emerald cut, or another cut. It largely depends on your style and preferences. We have compiled the special features of the cuts for you in a journal. If you need further assistance with your selection, you can always schedule a personal consultation with our jewelry designer Helge Maren to discuss your preferences and wishes. The perfect diamond jewelry for you is surely within reach!
