At the time, Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave his future wife Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring, to express his love through the preciousness and uniqueness of the stone. Because diamonds were so rare at the time, such a gesture was reserved for only a few wealthy people until the 19th century. From the 19th century onward, the solitaire engagement ring became increasingly popular as gemstone prices fell. After all, a diamond-set ring could wonderfully symbolize eternal togetherness. Its circular shape represents infinity, with no beginning and no end. By being passed down within the family, it also represents continuity.
